ASAN owns several pieces of farm equipment uniquely suited to small-scale sustainable production. We acquired this equipment as part of a collaborative grant in 2008, with the intention that, after the grant project ended, the equipment would be rented out for farmers to use on their own farms. That has happened, though not at the scale that we would have wanted, as proper management of the equipment’s rental, transport, maintenance, storage, and administration requires infrastructure and resources that ASAN simply does not have at this time.
Therefore we have decided to sell the equipment to ASAN members, so that it may see wider and/or more frequent use.
All funds generated from the sale of the equipment will be reinvested to fund ASAN’s work to support Alabama farmers in other ways, including providing conference scholarships, convening Food & Farm Forums, and providing information, resources, and community news through our quarterly newsletter.
The equipment for sale includes (scroll down this page or click to jump to a particular item):
(1) BCS walk-behind tractor – SOLD
(2) flail mower attachment for BCS – SOLD
(3) 6’ no-till grain drill – SOLD
(4) roller crimper attachment
(5) no-till transplanter – SOLD
(6) equipment trailer – SOLD
Purchasing eligibility:
You must be a current ASAN member at the Farm/Household level or higher ($50/year) in order to purchase the equipment. If you are not a member or your membership has expired, you can join/renew at https://asanonline.org/join-asan/.
Pricing:
All pieces of equipment are sold AS IS. They have been lightly used for about six years and are in good working condition. The asking prices are 50% of the purchase price, to account for depreciation from age and wear and tear. More information about each piece, including photos, is provided below.
In most cases, the equipment will not be sold for less than the asking price. Depending on the number of people who express interest in purchasing the equipment, prices may open up to some negotiation, especially if the buyer is able to show that the equipment will have a broader educational/training purposes or will be shared among multiple farmers (ex. a co-op). It is not a requirement for purchase, however, that the equipment be shared or used for education.
Transport:
The BCS walk-behind tractor and flail mower attachment are currently being housed in Hartselle, AL. All other pieces are currently housed in Shorter, AL. The buyer must arrange to pick up the equipment within three weeks of purchase, and is responsible for bringing a vehicle or trailer appropriate for transporting the purchased equipment.
Payment:
SALES TAX: All equipment purchases are subject to 1.5% sales tax in addition to the purchase price. The trailer is subject to 2% sales tax.
SCHEDULE FOR PAYMENT: The buyer must pay at least 50% of the total price (up to 100%, if preferable) at the time of purchase. Any remaining amount still owed must be paid before pickup of the equipment.
ACCEPTED FORMS OF PAYMENT: Payment may be made by check / money order (preferred), or using a credit/debit card. Debit/credit card transactions will incur a 3% processing fee.

The blades “flail” out by centrifugal force (at a drum speed of about 3000 rpm) to pulverize material. Flail mowers are excellent for reducing mowed material to a very small size for quick incorporation/breakdown into the soil; very popular for cover crops for this reason.”
