A new program the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) allows farmers to receive vouchers from senior citizens who visit the Farmers Market. Through the SFMNP, Lowndes County residents ages 60 and older can apply for, receive, and use vouchers to purchase fresh produce at farmers markets. Before farmers accept those vouchers from shoppers, they must complete the training.
A second farmer training is also on the calendar to be held in Ft. Deposit. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Tuskegee Extension Program will hold another training for farmers on March 18, 2021; 9:00 a.m..– 4:00 p.m.; Harvest Time Ministries, 500 Airport Road, Ft. Deposit, Alabama 36032.
This second training is free to all farmers and will focus on produce safety grower training. The Produce Safety Grower Training Course will offer instruction on : worker health, hygiene and training; soil amendments; wildlife, domesticated animals, and land use; agricultural water, post harvest handling and sanitation,and developing a farm food safety plan.
