From the organizers:
Alliance field days are hosted by sustainable farming operations throughout the state, and PJ Farm is living the definition of sustainability. They are “certified organic”, positioned for profitability, and engage positively with the world around them.
Field day presentations and discussions will include: “Improving Soil Health, Benefits of Herbs, Beekeeping, and Much More”.
PJ Farm was started by Jeff and Pat Scrimsher in 2010 and has been a certified organic farm since that time. When the farm was first started the land was overgrown and mostly woods. No one had occupied the land for almost a decade. With painstaking effort, Jeff cleared the land all by hand. The first few years, they starting out small. There were no organic operations in the Mississippi area to ask for advice, so they had to do a lot of research, and still do.
They started selling at the farmers market and whatever money they make goes back into the farm to keep building the operation. As the years pasted, they expanded production and sales. They have a nice herb line that has been added for culinary and medicinal purposes. They learned the art of beekeeping and keep about 30 hives. They harvest the honey and make products with the bees’ wax. They are growing organic produce year-round and have an internship programs on the farm to help others learn to grow organically.
