From the organizers:

A Pesticide Clean Day is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 13 in Macon County.

This program will allow farmers, pesticide applicators and dealers, pest control operators, and nursery workers to bring unwanted pesticides for safe and environmentally sound disposal. This disposal is conducted by an independent contractor and will not threaten the environment. There is no cost for disposal and there will be no questions asked as to why a person has any product.

Products
Products that will be disposed of include pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and rodenticides. People who have products with lost registration, illegible labels, are out of date, or are any of the mentioned products above that they cannot use, are encouraged to take advantage of this program. This allows people to protect the health of themselves and their employees, as well as their property and the environment.

Materials that will be accepted include both known and unidentifiable pesticide waste, such as insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other products such as defoliants, adjuvants, and growth retardants.

Materials that will not be accepted include, but are not limited to the following:

  • explosives or ordinance materials
  • compressed gas cylinders
  • petroleum products (motor oil)
  • paints
  • tires
  • medical waste
  • radioactive materials
  • dioxin precursors
  • seeds

The maximum amount accepted per vehicle will not exceed 1,000 pounds. If people have more than 1,000 pounds of material, please contact Daniel Sheffield, Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, at 334-240-7236, to see if special arrangements can be made for disposal of these unwanted pesticide products.

Funds are limited to perform this service. Because of this, registration for disposal is required. Registration forms will be considered on a first come, first served basis. When there are enough forms received that total 52,000 pounds of unwanted products, no additional products can be disposed.

Times of disposal will be announced after and person registers and is contacted. The event will end when the truck is full.

Please contact your county Extension office to get the Clean Day registration form. Forms can be returned to your county Extension office or faxed to Daniel Sheffield at 334-240-7168 on or before Nov. 11, if no overpack is required. People will be contacted and provided with all the collection details once their registration form is received. This makes it important that all forms are completely filled out and that adequate and accurate information is provided.

This program is conducted as a service to the public and is a joint effort between the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. For more information or to ask any questions, please contact your county Extension office or Sheffield at the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries at (334) 240-7236.
