Marble Creek Farmstead (Sylacauga, Talladega County):
Marble Creek Farmstead is a family farm that raises pastured chickens, pork, beef, lamb, goat, duck, turkey, and rabbit. They have a large egg business, and raise about one acre of vegetables for market gardens. They sell some products via wholesale channels, but mostly sell directly to the consumer via farmers markets and a pasture-raised meats CSA.  In addition to the farm they also own a USDA processing facility located in Pell City Alabama where they process all of their meats including poultry.  Open positions include: farm manager, vegetable gardener, poultry specialist, and/or livestock manager. Compensation is based on experience (Starting rate is at least $10/hr for no experience). Room and board is available for qualified applicants.  Full description available here.

Bois D’Arc Farm (Marion, Perry County):
Bois D’Arc Farm is a 5300-acre organic farm currently producing grains and other heritage crops.  The farm is developing test plots for crops including corn, antique wheat, upland rice, field peas, beans, sugar cane and sorghum, indigo, and possibly some older strains of culinary and medicinal herbs.  They are hiring for a manager of these test plots, and this person will be responsible for planning, planting, caring for, and documenting all aspects of the test plots. The ideal candidate will have several years experience in organic farming and great enthusiasm for rare and heritage varieties; ideally this person will have experience growing heritage grains, though candidates without that specific skillset will also be considered.  This manager’s work will be largely independent and self-directed, so accountability and good communication is important.  The position is salaried and includes housing as well as medical insurance. River Region Food Policy Council (based in Montgomery):
The River Region Food Policy Council is seeking unpaid summer interns to work with its new program, The Food Turn Up.  The Food Turn Up is an inter-generational community food assessment process where the RRFPC learns from the Tuskegee, Ft. Deposit and Montgomery communities to find out what food related issues are most important to them (hunger, obesity, economics, transportation, waste, etc) and to assess how we can help them be more effective in resolving those issues.  The culmination of this project will be a document supplemented with web and video content detailing the results of this tri-county community food assessment.

RRFPC is seeking self-motivated and community-minded interns for the summer and fall on a rolling basis. The internship is unpaid but they are very willing to work with students to satisfy their program or volunteer requirements, as well as providing the opportunity for a letter of recommendation and acknowledgement as a contributor to the assessment upon satisfactory completion of the internship.  For more information check out the internship flyer and program description, and contact Natilee McGruder at 334-549-2462 or [email protected].
